Data Pilot (pivot table) tutorial for OpenOffice Calc
Solveig Haugland posted an interesting tutorial to pivot tables in OpenOffice.org See the PDF file and try to learn how to use it.
Writer's Tools
Writer's Tools is an extension to help OpenOffice.org users perform a wide range of tasks.
Using Writer's Tools, you can back up documents, look up and translate words and phrases, manage text snippets, and keep tabs on document statistics.
BorderLiner
It provides a simple method to draw borders in tables and some text elements in OpenOffice.org Calc and Writer.
Select the line style in the toolbar, use the dialog to define the color. Then activate the extension (left most button). Now imagine the numerical key pad of your PC to be a table. "2" marks the bottom border, "8" the top and so on. Select the cells, press
- ALT+2 to draw a bottom line,
- CTRL+2 to pick the linestyle of the bottom line or
- SHIFT+2 to delete the bottom line etc.
In Calc you can also use the mouse: release the mouse close to the border you want to draw. If the mouse is released in the center of a cell, no line is drawn.
Supported are also selections of cells with multiple formats (bug in version 2.0) and multiple ranges of cells in Calc.
Linguist
This extension provides an easy way for users to create a list of new candidate words to the existing spellcheck dictionary for their language.
The extension is written in Python, which was probably not the easiest choice since Python support in OOo is not very well-documented yet.
OpenOffice.org extension will add PDF editing
Today the Linux.com writes about easy PDF editing that is coming to OpenOffice.org.
The Sun PDF Import extension (SPI) is only in beta, and only works with recent developer builds of OpenOffice.org 3.0, which is scheduled for September release.
Right now, the quality of the final release is anybody's guess, but the beta's capabilities fall squarely in the middle of the available PDF import tools.
